Wicked (2024) was one of the biggest films of its year. Now, with its sequel, Wicked: For Good (2025) almost out, fans of the franchise can’t wait to watch the press interviews, purchase the new merch, and embody their favorite characters.

Luckily, we can help you with the latter. These are our suggestions for Halloween costumes inspired by Wicked!

Elphaba

Source: Universal Pictures

We’re obsessed with how Cynthia Erivo has taken over this iconic role. Here are a few key aspects of her wardrobe:

  • Black
  • Texture, organic shapes
  • Puffed shoulder
  • Loose fitting but tight in the waist
  • High coverage
  • Of course, the hat

1. Arrival, The Wizard and I, Ozdust

These three outfits—when Elphaba first arrives at Shiz, when she runs through a field singing “The Wizard and I,” and when she parties at Ozdust—have a lot in common. All three are slight variations of her signature dress. It’s inspired by a similar dress from the original cast of the Broadway musical worn by Idina Menzel in 2003. The dress in question is long and black, reaching to her ankles. This is paired with her braid and round glasses, and eventually, her tall black hat. Additionally, her shoes are black and pointy in the Edwardian style.

Blouse: DVLSHOP

Skirt: Wolf & Badger

Boots: The Frye Company, American Dutchess

Hat: eBay, Etsy, local Halloween store

2. Shiz Uniform

Elphaba's Shiz' outfit, like her, is different from her peers. It’s a gray and white pinstripe set with a pointed shoulder on each side. The top is split into two parts, a broader part that ends at her bust, and a longer, more form-fitting part that goes down to her hips. The ensemble is complete with gold buttons. The shoes are more or less consistent throughout the film.

Sets: Leyot, Maniere de Vior, Belchic

3. Finale/Defying Gravity Outfit

Defying Gravity is the most iconic song of the show, so it makes sense that it’s paired with an iconic outfit. Like the rest of the pieces used for Elphaba throughout the movie, this dress is long and black, creating a slim silhouette. The most interesting part of the dress, though, is its texture. The fabric moves in waves, and the lines resemble organic shapes. It’s also made with lightweight material, which is what allows it to billow in the wind when she flies on her broom. This scene also introduces the audience to her cape, which becomes an important part of her character when she becomes a villain.

Glinda/Galinda

Source: The Wrap

Like Elphaba, Glinda has a wide variety of outfits. There are, however, some notable trends across her clothing choices.

  • The color pink
  • Light tones
  • A-line or ballgown silhouettes
  • Flowy/movement
  • Cinched waist
  • Half up/half down hair, face never obscured

1. Night Dresses

Glinda wears several nightdresses/nightgowns throughout the film. One is a peachy pink, satin number with lace detailing on the bust and sleeves, perfectly matching the pink curlers in her hair. She actually wears a similar satin dress she also wears only in the room. This dress has a more clear cinching of the waist, thin strap sleeves, and a triangle pattern extending upwards from the waist seam. The most memorable of her night dresses is the dressing robe she wears during “Popular.” The huge, spiral sleeves and spirals at the bottom are contrasting with almost no designs in the middle. The fabric in between is a sheer pink with faint polka dots. Out of all the costumes in the film, this one has seen a lot of attempts to replicate it exactly. Between people posting their fashion creations to Tiktok to selling them on Etsy and even Spirit Halloween.

That being said, for this piece we recommend buying from a smaller creator if possible, or if you’re up for a challenge, making it yourself!

2. Ozdust

Glina’s Ozdust party gown has quickly become a fan favorite. The bright pink and orange almost resemble coral or a beta fish under the dark, cool lighting at the party venue. As you’ve probably noticed with most of the Wicked dresses on this list, they all have the opportunity for movement. The key factors of movement in this dress are the lightweight fabric and the three main layers on the body. Like the “Popular” nightgown, this dress has been made pretty frequently by smaller designers. I was able to find multiple replicas on Etsy, but only one from a major brand (not including AliExpress, of course). The shoes are even harder to find. They feature a big to yellow gradient from bottom to top, with a wide clear heel. In this case, it might be best to find a simple gradient heel and let the dress do most of the talking

Dress: Asteria, Etsy, Velluto Rosso (least similar)

Shoes: GB, Schutz

3. Bubble Gown

This gown, of course, is based on the original design from the 1929 film. The bust is meant to replicate the shape of the sleeves, and the silhouette is a similar ball down design, just with more visible layers and a slightly darker dolor of pink. Of course, to go all out, you could probably find something similar at a prom/quinceañera store. However, this dress might be the most difficult to replicate on a budget. The fabric on the dress itself is unique, embroidered with shiny bubbles, and the bust is hand embroidered with hundreds of tiny beads. Her shoes are mostly invisible, but she does have two very key accessories to draw our eyes to instead: her crown and her magic wand.

Fiyero

Source: ABC News

Fiyero, played by Jonathan Bailey, is another one of the main characters in Wicked (2024), known for his relaxed attitude and powerful charm. His key colors are blue and gold, which he wears some variation of in every scene he’s in, along with tall riding boots. Here are some outfits of his that we think would make good costumes (the perfectly coiffed hair is not included)

1. Arrival outfit. Like Elphaba, his arrival on Shiz campus also causes a stir. This is only exacerbated by his costume, a dark blue jacket with popped collar and matching pants, all decorated with geometric gold embroidery. Underneath, he wears a shiny blue v-neck. It could also be worthwhile to include the orange flower he has pinned to his breast in the “Dancing Through Life” scene.

2. Shiz school uniform. Each character at Shiz wears a slightly different outfit to match their personality. Elphaba’s is dark, Glinda’s is pink, and Pfanee has a unique blazer/skirt combo. Fiyero also gets his own spin on it. He still has that cross neck high collar, but this time it’s in light blue. His blue blazer has gold thread running in a pattern around the hem in addition to the school’s logo. This ensemble is paired with a brown bag and tan pants.

3. Horseriding outfit. The first time Elphaba and Fiyero meet, he almost runs her over with his horse. In this scene, he wears a flowy white blouse, a dark blue vest, and light brown riding pants. In this scene, his riding boots are brown. And of course, the buttons are gold.

Oz/The Wizard

Souce: Universal Pictures

Elphaba and The Wizard have the same key color: emerald green. The Wizard only wears one outfit throughout his short appearance in the film, but it’s memorable in and of itself. Each part of this 3-piece suit is a different color of green. The pants are a lighter, checked green, the vest is the darkest, embroidered with flame patterns, and his long jacket is true emerald green. The vest is the most intricate piece with its hand embroidery and gold chains that connect the buttons. There’s also an interesting fabric piece between his white collared shirt and the vest, but for the sake of the halloween costume, a three piece suit will do. Other key aspects of his costume are his black top hat and cane.

Madame Morrible

Source: Universal Pictures

Madame Morrible is the principal of Shiz. Her outfits rely on their high collars, long frame, and square shoulders to communicate her position. Unlike Elphaba and Glinda, she wears quite a bit of jewelry, from rings, to necklaces, to earrings. For her costume, you could repurpose a queen costume, or pair a blouse, thick belt, and a long dress jacket. In one of her two dresses, she also has a golden headpiece, which would be an additionally nice touch. This costume would pair well with The Wizard.

What Showstopping Outfit Will You Choose?

We hope these outfits will give you some inspiration for the upcoming holiday and future years to come!
